Tradition, Technique and Individual Expression in Contemporary Tabla Solo Performance: A Comparative Analysis of Shubhankar Banerjee and Anandogopal Bandyopadhyaya

Abstract: The evolution of tabla solo performance in contemporary Hindustani music reflects a dynamic interaction between inherited tradition and individual artistic expression. While the classical framework of tabla performance remains rooted in established compositional forms and gharana-based pedagogies, modern performers increasingly contribute distinctive interpretative approaches that reshape the listening experience. This paper examines the solo performance traditions of Shubhankar Banerjee and Anandogopal Bandyopadhyaya, two eminent tabla exponents whose artistic identities represent different perspectives within contemporary tabla practice. Employing a musicological approach, the study investigates issues of repertoire organization, gharana influence, improvisational methodology, technical execution, and pedagogical significance. Through comparative analysis, the paper demonstrates that both artists maintain strong connections with traditional tabla culture while developing unique performance vocabularies. The study argues that contemporary tabla artistry is best understood as a process of creative negotiation between preservation and innovation. By examining these two influential musicians, the paper contributes to current discussions regarding the evolution of Hindustani percussion traditions and the role of individual creativity within classical music systems.
